As for material, you have your pick of what materials produce your favorite texture, pile-height, and durability/ease of cleaning, so think through what you need practically and stylistically as you shop for your perfect rug.

The best size rug to completely fill a 10x12 room would be an 8x10 rug or a round/square rug of a similar size. The key is to leave room to breathe on the sides and ends of the rug so that it's not pressed right up against the walls and crowding the space.
Rooms that are 12x13 are well accented by rectangular rugs. A 9x12 rug can fill the majority of the room, or a smaller 6x9 or 8x10 rug can accent specific areas. When using a 9x12 rug in a 12x13 room, it’s important to place the rug so the longer portion of the rug spans the longest side of the room. That way, there is still 6 inches of flooring visible between the rug’s edges and the walls.

Those rug sizes will give you plenty of room to work with and options with layering your furniture as well as blending together several areas of the room.

There are plenty of machine washable rugs out there that are great for high-traffic areas or homes with kids, but there are other materials as well that are easy to spot-clean. Within your search for materials, you can also choose different pile heights and looks, such as a shag rug or a flat-weave. Even in the different materials, you can find patterns that fit into a variety of styles, such as geometric shapes that are modern or boho along with oriental medallions that can elevate homey styles like farmhouse. There’s a lot out there to sift through, but it comes down to your preference with style, comfort, and practicality.
